The Namo Bharat is an Indian electric train developed for the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). It was both designed and manufactured in India. The train was designed by the French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom at its engineering centre in Hyderabad, Telangana, and manufactured at its facility in Savli, Gujarat. Featuring an aerodynamic design, the Namo Bharat train reduces air resistance during travel, enhancing efficiency. It has been operational on the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor since 2023.
History of Namo Bharat Train
- As the RapidX service was conceived, there was a requirement for a new semi-high-speed trainset, specifically designed for regional rail travel.
- Under the Make in India initiative, the trainsets were planned to be locally manufactured.
- In 2019, the NCRTC (National Capital Region Transport Corporation) floated tenders for the procurement of trainsets.
- In early 2020, NCRTC finalized the procurement with Bombardier Transportation (later acquired by Alstom) to manufacture the trainsets at Savli, Gujarat.
- The localization target for the train was finalized at 50% local components, reduced from the original 75%, still aligned with the Make in India policy.
- Later in 2020, the design of the train was unveiled to the public.
- The train features a stainless steel body and is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 180 km/h.
- On 19 October 2023, the trainset was officially named “Namo Bharat”.
- On 20 October 2023, the train was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- On 21 October 2023, the commercial service of Namo Bharat began on the Duhai–Sahibabad section of the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor.
About Namo Bharat Train
Exterior- The use of a stainless steel body makes the Namo Bharat train relatively lighter in weight, enhancing its efficiency and performance. To ensure smooth and quick boarding, each coach is equipped with six doors—three on each side—except for the Business Class (Premium Coach), which features four doors, with two on each side. Additionally, all coaches are fitted with double-glazed, tempered safety glass windows for improved safety and insulation.
Interior- The Namo Bharat train features a 2×2 seating arrangement with ample legroom for passenger comfort. To accommodate standing passengers during peak hours, the aisles are equipped with grab handles and support poles. Designed for regional travel, the train also includes overhead luggage racks. In terms of digital amenities, the train offers:
- On-board Wi-Fi
- Public announcement and display systems
- Infotainment displays
- Dynamic route map displays
- Emergency communication facilities
For energy efficiency, the trainsets are equipped with ambient lighting and advanced temperature control systems. The train is also accessible, featuring a dedicated space for wheelchairs. When it comes to safety, the train is equipped with:
- Fire and smoke detectors
- CCTV surveillance
- Fire extinguishers
- Door status indicators
- An advanced Train Control Monitoring System (TCMS) with predictive and condition-based monitoring for improved operational reliability.
Technology- The trainset is equipped with an advanced signalling system known as ETCS Level 3 Hybrid Technology over LTE, which enhances safety, supports interoperability, reduces waiting time, and improves operational efficiency. Looking ahead, there are plans to integrate Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over LTE to further boost network performance and increase capacity.
Namo Bharat Train Delhi to Meerut

Under the first phase of NCRTC’s development of three corridors, the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor is one of the key routes and is currently operational. The Namo Bharat train is presently running on this corridor, and the same trainsets are expected to be deployed on other proposed Namo Bharat routes in the future.
The Namo Bharat train set was first introduced into service on 20 October 2023, when the Delhi–Meerut line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, covering the Sahibabad to Duhai section. As of now, the train is operational from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South, covering a total distance of 55 km. Full Details Here
Namo Bharat Train Route

The Namo Bharat Train operates on the Delhi–Meerut Regional Namo Bharat (RRTS) corridor, spanning a total distance of 82.15 km. Of this, 68.03 km is elevated, 14.12 km is underground, and 1.45 km is at-grade, mainly for connectivity to the depots at Duhai and Modipuram. With just a few taps, users can book their Namo Bharat train tickets on the go.
