The Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat project is an 82.15 km long semi-high-speed regional transit corridor that connects the NCR cities of Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. As the first of three rapid rail corridors planned under Phase 1 of the RapidX initiative, it is being developed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).
The Namo Bharat Train is engineered for a top speed of 180 km/h (110 mph), reducing travel time between Delhi and Meerut to under 60 minutes. The project is valued at ₹30,274 crore (approximately USD 3.8 billion). It starts from Jangpura in Delhi, passes through Sarai Kale Khan, which will serve as the terminal for all three proposed corridors, and concludes at Modipuram in Meerut.
Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Project in March 2019, with construction commencing shortly after in June 2019.
On January 5, 2025, the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor was extended from Meerut South to New Ashok Nagar, increasing the operational length to 55 km. The corridor and its trains are owned by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), while operations are managed by DB RRTS Operations India Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn (DB).

Development History of the Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor
Project Approval and Construction Timeline
The feasibility study and Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the NCRTC received approval from the Government of Uttar Pradesh in May 2017. Subsequently, in February 2019, the Government of India approved the project’s implementation along with funding of ₹30,274 crore. On March 8, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for both the first Namo Bharat corridor and the Meerut Metro Project. Construction work for both projects officially commenced in June 2019.
Starting Date of the Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail
The first phase of the Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor, covering a 17 km stretch from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, was initially scheduled to become operational by March 2023. However, due to pending work at several stations, the launch was delayed. The corridor was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20, 2023. Subsequently, the remaining Namo Bharat stations in Ghaziabad district—Muradnagar, Modinagar South, and Modinagar North—were opened to the public on March 7, 2024.
Opening of Initial RRTS Stations in Meerut and Delhi
Meerut South became the first Namo Bharat station in Meerut to open to the public on August 18, 2024. In Delhi, the first two Namo Bharat stations—New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar—were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 5, 2025. The remaining stations along the corridor are expected to be operational by July 2025.
Operations and Maintenance Company
In July 2022, the NCRTC awarded the operations and maintenance contract for the Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor to Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s national railway company. The agreement covers 12 years, with an optional extension of five additional years. Following the corridor’s inauguration, DB established a subsidiary—DB RRTS Operations India Pvt. Ltd., which took over operational responsibilities from day one.
Service Provider and Trains
The NCRTC branded the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat service as RapidX, and the trains operating on the corridor are named Namo Bharat. These are India’s fastest rapid transit trains, with an operational speed of 160 km/h (99 mph). The branding and naming were officially announced soon after the corridor’s inauguration.
Construction of the Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor
The construction of the Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor is progressing in four phases. The first section, from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, opened in October 2023 and is completed. The second phase, covering Duhai Depot to Meerut South, became operational in August 2024. The third phase, from Sarai Kale Khan to Sahibabad, is partially open as of January 2025, with New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar stations already operational while Sarai Kale Khan remains under construction. The final stretch, from Meerut South to Modipuram Depot, is currently under construction and expected to open by July 2025.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Route

The Meerut-Delhi Namo Bharat corridor covers a total distance of 82.15 km. Out of this, 68.03 km (42.27 miles) will be constructed as elevated tracks, 14.12 km will run underground, and 1.45 km will be at ground level to provide access to depots located at Duhai and Modipuram. In densely populated areas of Delhi and Meerut, including regions near the Yamuna River and Anand Vihar, the corridor will be built underground to minimise disruption and efficiently navigate through urban zones.
The corridor will begin at Jangpura and follow its primary route from Sarai Kale Khan Station. It will traverse key regions across Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut, ultimately concluding at Modipuram in Meerut.
- Since January 2025, the 55 km long New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South section has been operational.
- The rest of the Delhi and Meerut stations are expected to be operational by July 2025.
- After the addition of Jangpura as the starting station of the corridor, slated to open after the opening of the entire corridor, the number of stations became 16 from the previous plan of 14.
Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut Namo Bharat Stations
The Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor features a mix of elevated, underground, and at-grade stations designed for high-speed regional connectivity. Many key stations such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, Murad Nagar, Modinagar, and Meerut South are already operational, with phased openings completed between October 2023 and August 2024. Stations at Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar are also ready for service by January 2025. Meanwhile, major hubs like Jangpura, Sarai Kale Khan, Begumpul, Shatabdi Nagar, and Modipuram remain under construction and are expected to open by mid-2025. This modern, high-speed network aims to dramatically cut travel times across NCR while offering world-class commuter facilities.
