The Meerut Metro Project was first proposed in 2016, when Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) prepared and presented a detailed project report to the state government. Later, on 8 March 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the RRTS.
The construction of the Meerut Metro started in June 2019, with the original target for completion set for 2025. Some station works, however, caused delays. After the project’s integration with the RRTS, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has taken charge of both the metro system and its trains.

Evolution of the Meerut Metro Project
- Proposal and Submission (2010–2016):
- The idea of introducing a metro system in Meerut, along with the RRTS, was first proposed by the Government of India and the Uttar Pradesh State Government in early 2010.
- The need for the metro was driven by Meerut’s rapidly growing population, increasing traffic congestion, and its strategic proximity to the NCR region.
- In June 2015, Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) completed a preliminary assessment of the project.
- The Detailed Project Report (DPR) was formally submitted to the Government of India in June 2016.
- Metro Connectivity Plan (2017):
- In 2017, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) officially initiated the project.
- The initial alignment proposed 11 stations from Partapur to Modipuram.
- To enhance coverage and link boundary areas of Meerut, the plan was revised to 13 stations, stretching from Meerut South to Modipuram Depot.
- Foundation Stone and Commencement of Construction (2019):

- Re-bidding After Galwan Valley Clash (2020):
- In 2020, following the Galwan Valley clash between India and China, the Government of India cancelled contracts involving Chinese companies for metro train manufacturing.
- As a result, the NCRTC initiated a re-bidding process.
- On 7 May 2024, the contract was awarded to Alstom after its successful bid over Bombardier Transportation.
- Manufacturing of Metro Trains:
- Alstom is currently producing the metro coaches at its Savli, Gujarat plant.
- The company will deliver a total of 210 coaches for 30 trains, with each train consisting of 3 coaches.
- First Train Set Delivered (2024):
- On 16 February 2024, Alstom officially delivered the first train set of the Meerut Metro to the NCRTC.
- First Trial Run (2025):
- On 12 January 2025, the first trial run of the Meerut Metro was successfully conducted between Meerut South Station and Meerut Central Station.
- As of now, the project remains on schedule, with the official launch expected by the end of 2025.

The Meerut Metro Project is currently progressing on a 23.60 km corridor, designed with a combination of elevated, underground, and at-grade stations. This development is taking place in parallel with the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, making it the first project in India where a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and a city metro will share the same track.
The corridor will consist of 13 stations in total, out of which 4 stations will serve as key interchange points between the Namo Bharat and the Meerut Metro.

The Meerut Metro covers a stretch of 23.60 km (14.70 mi), comprising 14.80 km of elevated track and 8.80 km of underground sections. The project, currently under construction, is being implemented by the National Capital Regional Transport Corporation (NCRTC).
In total, the corridor will feature 13 stations, beginning from Meerut South and concluding at the Modipuram Depot. The Modipuram Depot will serve as the primary operations hub for the metro network while also providing crucial support for the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor.

Stations of Meerut Metro – Detailed Overview
1. Meerut South Metro Station (Code: A10)
- Managed by NCRTC, this elevated station is located on NH 34, Bhud Baral.
- It features two platforms and two tracks across three levels: street, concourse, and platform.
- The station measures 215 meters in length and 26 meters in width, with tracks positioned 24 meters above ground.
- It will serve as a direct interchange with the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat.
2. Partapur Metro Station (Code: A11)

Other expected corridor of Meerut Metro
The first corridor of the Meerut Metro, stretching from Bhudbaral (Meerut South) to Modipuram, is nearly ready for passenger operations. This phase is integrated with the Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), allowing both Namo Bharat trains and Meerut Metro services to run on shared tracks. While the RRTS will provide long-distance connectivity to Delhi, the metro service will cater specifically to local commuters within Meerut, covering the section between Modipuram and Bhudbaral.
For the next phases, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being revised. The second corridor, initially planned from Shardhapuri Phase-II to Gokulpur village via Hapur Adda Crossing, is now under review. In the updated plan, the route is expected to begin from Begumpul and extend towards Gokulpur or further, based on city development needs. Additionally, a third corridor has been proposed from Football Chowk to Baghpat Road Flyover, showcasing the expanding vision to enhance metro connectivity throughout Meerut city.

Meerut Metro Start Date
The Meerut Metro project is progressing steadily, with all station structures completed and final finishing work underway. Currently, Meerut South stands as the only station fully ready for operation. It functions as a shared facility for both the Meerut Metro and the Delhi–Meerut Rapid Rail. The Rapid Rail is already operational from this station, providing direct connectivity to the New Ashok Nagar RRTS Station in Delhi.
The underground stations along the RRTS corridor in Meerut have also been constructed, with work now focused on building entry and exit gates and completing the interior finishing.
Meerut Metro Opening Date: The Meerut Metro is expected to open by October 2025. All pending works, including system trials and safety checks, are anticipated to be completed before the inauguration, paving the way for the commencement of passenger services by 2025.

Manufacturing of Meerut Metro
After the Galwan Valley clash between the Indian and Chinese armies, the Indian government canceled its earlier agreement with a Chinese company for metro train manufacturing. A fresh bidding process was conducted, and Alstom secured the project on 7 May 2020. Since then, Alstom—a globally renowned French railway manufacturing company—has been responsible for producing and supplying the metro trains. The company operates major manufacturing facilities in Savli, located in Vadodara district of Gujarat.
Alstom is producing a total of 30 coaches, configured into 10 trainsets with three coaches each, and offering a passenger capacity of around 700 per train. The first trainset was officially delivered to the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) on 16 February 2024. While the trains are manufactured at the Savli plant, their design and engineering are handled at Alstom’s Hyderabad engineering centre.
These metro trains are designed for a maximum speed of 135 km/h and can operate at a commercial speed of 120 km/h. This makes them the second-fastest rapid transit trains in India, following the Namo Bharat trains of the Delhi–Meerut RRTS, which can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h.
