Namo Bharat Expansion Announced at Urban Mobility India 2025

Shri Manohar Lal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs & Power, Government of India, inaugurated the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) exhibition stall at the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Expo 2025, held at Hotel Hyatt Regency, Gurugram, from November 7–9.

The event also witnessed the visit of Shri Nayab Singh Saini, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Haryana, who toured the NCRTC stall on the second day of the conference.

During the inaugural session, Shri Manohar Lal emphasized the importance of fast, efficient regional connectivity, stating:

“After a distance of about 50–60 km, the metro becomes unviable — not in terms of fare, but in terms of time. Traveling such distances by metro takes over an hour, while people increasingly seek faster options. That’s where the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) comes in. Unlike the metro, which has stations every 2 km, RRTS stations are spaced about 8 km apart, offering higher speeds and time savings.”

He further revealed that the Government is preparing a new policy to extend RRTS systems beyond the NCR to major cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, catering to daily commuters traveling up to 100 km.

“The Cabinet note is ready, and once approved, RRTS will be implemented in these major cities,” he added.

Highlighting NCRTC’s progress, the Minister shared that following the success of the Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, two new corridors — Sarai Kale Khan to Bawal and Sarai Kale Khan to Karnal — will be taken up next. Currently, a 55-km stretch between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South, spanning 11 stations, is operational, with the remaining section to be opened soon.

At the NCRTC stall, Shri Manohar Lal, accompanied by Shri Tokhan Sahu, Hon’ble Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, was welcomed by Shri Shalabh Goel, Managing Director, NCRTC. The dignitaries were briefed about the commuter-centric innovations of the Namo Bharat system, including:

  • ETCS Level 2 (Hybrid Level 3) signaling over LTE
  • Meerut Metro, India’s first metro service to operate on Namo Bharat infrastructure

The exhibition highlights how India’s first semi-high-speed regional rail network is transforming regional mobility, fostering economic growth, and advancing the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’. Visitors are experiencing firsthand how Namo Bharat’s advanced features are redefining regional travel and unlocking the development potential of the National Capital Region.

The Urban Mobility India (UMI) 2025 conference is jointly organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, and the Government of Haryana. This year’s theme, ‘Urban Development and Mobility Nexus’, focuses on the interconnections between urban planning and mobility systems, and their collective impact on economic growth, environmental sustainability, social equity, and public health.

NCRTC’s vibrant exhibition stall, featuring interactive models, digital displays, and information panels, is attracting strong visitor interest, showcasing how the Namo Bharat system represents a major leap toward modern, sustainable, and people-centric regional transport.
