The Uttar Pradesh government has officially approved the Lucknow–Kanpur Rapid Rail project under the Namo Bharat Corridor, marking a major step forward in revolutionising intercity travel within the state. Once operational, this high-speed corridor will reduce the current two-hour journey between Lucknow and Kanpur to just 40 minutes, offering commuters a faster, safer, and more efficient travel option.
Government Grants Green Signal to 67 km Lucknow–Kanpur Namo Bharat Corridor
Lucknow–Kanpur Namo Bharat Corridor Approved– According to a recent government order, the initial alignment of the 67-kilometre-long Lucknow–Kanpur Namo Bharat Corridor has been approved. This clearance paves the way for the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and technical surveys by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) — the same agency overseeing the Delhi–Meerut Rapid Rail.
The Housing and Urban Planning Department has already sent an official report to the Central Government and NCRTC’s Managing Director, confirming the project’s preliminary approval.
High-Speed Travel Across Three Key Districts
The Lucknow–Kanpur Rapid Rail will pass through three districts — Lucknow, Unnao, and Kanpur, connecting the state capital with its major industrial hub. A high-power committee has been constituted by the state government to coordinate between local authorities of these districts, ensuring seamless collaboration for land acquisition, environmental clearance, and construction approvals. The committee will also work to expedite necessary permissions and resolve administrative challenges to keep the project on track.
Modern High-Speed Connectivity at 160 km/h
The upcoming Namo Bharat trains will operate at speeds of up to 160 km per hour, significantly enhancing regional connectivity. The corridor is expected to start from Amausi Airport (Lucknow), pass through Unnao, and terminate at Kanpur, with just three main stops along the route. Currently, the road journey between Lucknow and Kanpur takes around two hours, but with the rapid rail system, the same distance will be covered in just 40 minutes.
Boost to Regional Development and Connectivity
The Lucknow–Kanpur Namo Bharat Corridor is not just a transport project — it’s a major infrastructure milestone that will strengthen economic and industrial integration between the two major cities. The corridor will facilitate faster movement of people, promote business growth, and support sustainable urban development in the region. By combining high-speed rail technology with modern urban planning, this project reflects Uttar Pradesh’s growing focus on green mobility and smart transportation solutions.
